DIY Frida Kahlo Inspired Flower Headband

I gather it’s not a secret that I absolutely adore Frida Kahlo. Right? I have shared with you one of my favorite necklaces (that has her beautiful face), you’ve seen my art, which is obviously inspired by her, and then there’s my Etsy shop where I have quite a few Frida quotes in stock. 🙂  So, it should not come as a surprise that I sometimes go down a Frida rabbit hole while I’m scrolling through Pinterest. There are so many fun goodies and inspiration out there all in honor of Frida. And that doesn’t shock me at all.

Frida has and will continue to be an inspiration to girls and women. She’s truly a symbol of strength and endurance defeating odds, while of course doing what she loved. I can totally stand behind that.

Anyway, where I was going with this…? OH YES… Pinterest! Pinterest has such beautiful Frida inspired goodies. One thing I noticed is all the beautiful Frida Flower Crown Headbands, but some of them were crazy expensive! I’ve seen some of these babies go for over 60 DOLLARS. DID YOU HEAR ME? I said OVER SIXTY DOLLARS!! That’s insane for this frugal pants. I even found a few OVER $100, but, in fairness, those ones were a little more intricate.

I wouldn’t say they are more elaborate than Beyonce’s hairpiece:

Now, I can’t promise you a Beyoncé crown, but I can show you how to save a few bucks making your own DIY Frida Khalo Inspired Flower Headband/Crown. All you’ll need is a trip to the Dollar Tree and Michaels or whichever you like most. 🙂 I’m fans of both, so I went to both.

DIY Frida Kahlo Inspired Flower Crown Headband’S’ under $10

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Frida Kahlo Inspired Headbands:

• Head Bands
• Flowers
• Glue Gun and Glue sticks
• Wire cutters or really tough scissors

DIY Frida Kahlo Inspired Flower Crown Headbands

This was the first time I used this type of headband to make a flower headband. Oh, yes, I’ve done this before. Some of you may not know this, but I use to make pretty little girly headbands and the occasional tutu on Etsy. I really didn’t do too hot there. However, I sold quite a few of them locally. 🙂 That’s why I started the Etsy thing, but I really didn’t know what I was doing and I was in WAAYYY over my head. If only I knew what I know now.

Let’s get back on track. DIY Frida Kahlo Flower Headband

These headbands can be found at Dollar Tree for $1. 3 headbands for $1. I wasn’t sure if I was going to love or hate the open squares. I figured this may make things easier when trying to arrange the flowers, so I grabbed them. (Also, my daughter’s like the way they grab their hair. No slipping.)

Notice those tiny little hands below? Those aren’t mine. 🙂 Those are my daughter’s, she’s 11 (she’s also the cutie in the picture above in the Halloween tutu. Eh… time flies.), she made her own Frida Inspired Pink Flower Headband /Crown with very little help.

Most Dollar Trees have a floral section where you can find bright florals, but I knew the color scheme I wanted, so I headed to Michaels for my flowers. Plus I had a coupon and there was 50% off of spring florals. I even got flowers for $1!! (Full disclosure: I own a few glue guns and I probably have missing fingerprints 😀 ) My daughter and I had so much fun making these beauties.

But how do you do it, Dean?

Truly it’s quite simple. You can snip the stems completely off (keep some of the leaves!) or if you want to keep the stems on because you’re using these handy dandy headbands from Dollar Tree you can keep the stems on and snip ’em later. I went that route. 😉  (Make sure to snip as much as you can off, I was able to remove all the way to the green of the flower. I know you can’t tell in this picture, but it’s totally doable.)

Try to add a little glue between flowers to help keep them together. Occasionally if you want to wrap a petal to the headband that helps too. I made sure to apply a good amount of glue in a circle around the base of the flower before attaching to the headband. We added a few leaves to the headbands, I also added flowers on the back of the headband to cover up any open spots. Can you tell which flowers cost me a dollar?

That’s it, you’re done. Well, wait there’s one more thing, glue cleanup.

Hot Glue Tip:

Clean up the random strings of hot glue using a blowdryer. 🙂 It works!

We even made a baby Frida flower headband, but sadly, there isn’t a cute picture of a baby. 🙁 Does a cute stuffed animal work?

This is even more simple and SUPER CHEAP. 🙂 Grab an old pair or new pair of knee high stockings cut about 2-3 inches off. Roll it the strip in your hand it will instantly roll into a little headband. Glue on a few flowers and a leaf or two, add some felt to the back of the headband if you’d like. DONE.
