Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief #BookReview

Posted on

My daughter is a book lover, if you didn’t realize that by now.  I love her ability to take on 2-3 books at a time, I do not believe I can do that.  However, she does, and does so with ease.

What I love the most about her love of books and her Summer Series here on my blog, we talk, I mean we talk and laugh, and bond over books.  I love our chats.  My hope is that you too will read with your child, share a story with your child, and listen to your child’s thoughts on their favorite story.  And now, I’m going to let my child, introduce you to this week’s book.

XOXO

The Catcher in The Book: a tween summer reading series. #BookReviews for #Tweens

Hello! Today, I’m sharing book 1 in the Series Percy Jackson & The Olympians, The Lightning Thief.  There are five books in this series: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters,The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympians.

Percy Jackson thinks he is a normal boy, however he is about to learn otherwise.  You see, Percy has the unfortunate knack for getting himself into trouble, which then ends up getting himself kicked out of yet another school.  The thing is, every time he is booted from school it is because he attracts mythology monsters.  Percy Jackson is a demigod, not necessarily a normal boy.  Zeus believes Percy has stolen the master lightning bolt.  Before Percy is informed of what is going on and who he is, he is taken to a safe place, the place is meant for other demigods, Camp Half Blood.  While making new friends at the camp he is given a quest.  Percy must return the master lighting bolt (which he does not have) before the winter solstice.  If he does not complete this mission bad things will happen.  Percy must now find the real lightning thief, return the bolt and meet with his father to ask why he left his mother as well as him.  Can Percy do it all in time?

My thoughts: Once again, I’m reminded not to judge a book by its cover.  I thought the book was going to be really boring.  I actually tried reading it before when I was in 4th grade, but now that I have a better understanding of Greek mythology, the book just clicked. This book this series, is exceptional. After zipping through this book, I couldn’t wait to finish the series.  The series will NOT disappoint.

I love this book! I can’t wait until Scarlet can devour books the way I always have.

Awesome! My daughter has nothing but great things to say about the entire series.
You and Scarlet will have the best time chatting about books, as she devours them 2-3 or 3-4 at a time, it’s the best! I’m seriously in awe of my daughter’s ability to take on SO many books at a time. I stick to one at a time…

This is a great book review! I have heard good things about the series and should check out the movie, too 🙂 It’s always more fun to have background knowledge on what you’re reading (like with Greek mythology!) I look forward to my son starting to read ♥

Thanks! We just watched the movies not too long ago. The rule here is you have to read the book(s) before you see the movie 🙂
You’re going to love when your son starts reading, it’s one of the best feelings!

I actually own the series and can’t wait for the day when Madison can read them on her own. Like your daughter said, it sire doesn’t disappoint.

It will be nice for you to hear Madison’s point-of-view on the series when she gets older, huh? I’m enjoying this aspect of where my daughter and I are now, where we talk about books and music, and share our opinions, respectfully 🙂
Thanks for commenting, my daughter absolutely loves to see her comments.

We do a family reading night once a week, that we recently expanded to twice a week. During that time all 4 of us sit in the living room and my husband and I take turns reading out load to the whole family for about a half hour. Right now we are reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as a family.

We tried doing The Lightening Thief as one of our family books, but it turned out to be way over our 8-year-old’s head, which makes sense since your daughter struggled with it in 4th grade. I’m glad she enjoyed the book and we will definitely hold on to it until our son is older and can understand it better.

That is wonderful! My husband and I have talked about implementing a family book again, we use to do it, but for some reason we stopped. I know…. BOOOO! We are thinking of reading Harry Potter to the kids, although my oldest has read each book in the series about 10 times each 😀 It’s fun to see their reaction to the books, right? I like to do voices, so I have to get practicing on my English accent.

My daughter was excited to read The Lightning Thief and then it fizzled. I think having a better understanding helped immensely, because this time around she couldn’t wait to get her hands on the following books in the series.
Thanks for stopping in and leaving a comment, my daughter appreciates it too!

This is a great book review by your daughter. My son won’t pick up a book if the cover looks boring.

Thank you, Chastity. My daughter appreciates your comment.

Sadly, I think I too have done the same, it looks boring and I pass, then I see someone rave about it.
