Last week we enjoyed seeing how Marilyn Monroe’s quote inspired you, thank you!
The word “stupid” bothers me. It sticks out in this quote, it’s ugly, harsh, not my favorite word, despite that I kind of see what Jane was saying. Yes, I ‘m on a first name basis with Jane Austen… we’re homies.
Jane was a novelist, her works have been dubbed literary masterpieces. And with that you could understand a woman so driven to create such wonderful works that are internationally known years, decades, centuries later would seem passionate with her words. I may think “stupid” is harsh, but I do understand her conviction. I love books. Sometimes I become downright evangelical about the books I read, I want to spread the word, I want people to love it as much as I, but when I hear “I don’t like to read,” I want to cry. I want to take out my book water and douse said non-reader. Okay, was that a bit dramatic? However, you get the point.
Reading is a luxury many of us do NOT take advantage of, myself included. I have a stack of books at my bedside and because my mind is always in a 101 places, I do not take as much time as I should to pick up a book and stick my nose in there for a few hours. I wish I would do that more. However, it’s nice when I can get people to stick their noses in a book- when my zeal for a book rubs off on someone else that is rewarding.
Have you ever read the book The Bridges of Madison County? No, it is not a literary masterpiece, but it is a book that I thought I would never read. I actually got a group of 17-23 year-olds to read it with me! 😀 I borrowed The Bridges of Madison County from my boyfriend’s (now husband) mom. I was just trying to make small talk and the book was there, which then led me to take a book from Ohio (I had no real interest in) to Texas. I figured I should read the book incase she wanted to know my thoughts on the book. I took the book with me to work -I worked as a receptionist at a car dealership- there were days when it was slow, why not read the book there. I found it hilarious that the girls that worked at the desk started to read the book too. We would leave notes for each other in the book. In a way, it was like we created a secret book club because obviously we did not want our boss to know we were reading at work. 🙂
After reading The Bridges of Madison County, I decided we needed another book, I started to write my own. I wrote a story about a girl facing rough times seeking love, it was pretty good. Again, the girls at the desk were hooked, they would leave me notes: “I love this part.” “I can’t stand her mom.” “More!” “I cannot wait to read what happens next!” Those little notes kept me motivated! But all good things have to come to an end.
BUSTED! The lead receptionist “our manager” found my story, our books, and other things in our desk she did not think belonged there. She took my story and threw it away. And for about 50 minutes of my life I despised her! I thought, how stupid!?! The secret book club was over. Stupid is harsh, but stupid is as stupid does….

March 19, 2015 at 8:37 amI love that you were inspired to write your own story. I hate that your manager threw out your work. I love that you share your writing with us now!!

March 19, 2015 at 4:47 pmI could not believe she did that either, I was furious! I’m thankful to be able to share my writing here with all of you, you keep me going. 🙂

March 19, 2015 at 9:43 amOh my gosh! I love the secret book club so much. What a great way to read “together”!
I would have despised that manager for throwing away my stuff, too. Even if I wasn’t supposed to be reading at work.

March 20, 2015 at 9:57 amThe secret book club was pretty awesome. 🙂 It was fun to see the notes the girls left in the desk from the night before.
You know what… I thought I was over it, but apparently I’m not. While I was writing up this post I got mad all over again, I may have swallowed back angry tears.
Thanks for stopping by, Tracie!

March 19, 2015 at 9:45 amWow, sorry to hear about the manager, that’s not right. That looks like a good book though!!!

March 20, 2015 at 10:16 amNot right at all! Argh- I cannot believe she did that still.

March 19, 2015 at 9:57 amYour manager sounds like a pain in the booty! I cannot believe she threw away your book. That is just not right! And seriously, how else does she want you to pass the time?? LAME.
On a side note I have never read Bridges of Madison County… maybe I’ll add it to my list. My list that just keeps growing because I can not find a hot minute to read a book. XO
MrsA0K2001
March 20, 2015 at 4:32 pmShe certainly could be a pain in the booty, sometimes. That particular day she was my arch nemesis!
I’m with you what else were we to do, we didn’t have smartphones!
My list is insane… SO MANY BOOKS SO LITTLE TIME.

March 19, 2015 at 9:10 pmI love Jane Austen, and I completely agree with that quote, even if it’s harsh 🙂
I would have freaked out if my manager through away my story…
MrsA0K2001
March 20, 2015 at 4:45 pmGood! I’m glad you can connect with Jane’s quote, I know some found this quote to be off-putting, but I totally see her point. Courtney and I knew some people would be turned off, and that’s okay, I love a little debate. 🙂
I was devastated! I could not imagine how she thought that was okay, I still cannot.

March 19, 2015 at 10:27 pmI’ve never read The Bridges of Madison County (or seen the movie), but I’ve always heard so much about it. I definitely agree that reading is a privilege that many of us don’t take advantage of enough, I know I don’t!
MrsA0K2001
March 20, 2015 at 4:47 pmI have not watched the movie either.
One of my goals for this year was to read more, I’m not doing so hot. :-/
I guess I should get on that 🙂

March 20, 2015 at 11:30 pmSecret book club – I need that in my life. haha. It sounds like fun.
I totally agree with the quote. I am not really sure what to do with people who “don’t like to read.” Um, well, I don’t like you, so there, non-reading ninny. Hahaha. OK, I’ll be nice. 🙂
I can’t wait to write my post and link up! I’ll do it this weekend. xo

March 23, 2015 at 10:38 amWe should have a secret book club here, like the Fight Club. #1 rule there is no Secret Book Club. 🙂 Sadly, our secret was out and so was my story.
I CANNOT wait to read your post! I’m sure it’s going to be amazeballs. 🙂

March 21, 2015 at 11:23 amOMG, that manager was mean! One of the best things in life, to me, is when people connect over words and books. I’m a voracious reader. Just finished Persuasion a little while ago, which was the last Austen I had to read. Totally agree w/ her even if I also agree about the word “stupid.” Sometimes that word seems harsher than curse words and I’m trying to not say it around my daughter. I’ll have to reconsider reading Bridges of Madison County–I have to admit to being a book snob! But I also like to mix up my reading. Just read What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty which I loved and now reading Wolf Hall for the challenge. Thought it would be harder to read but so far it’s a pleasure.
MrsA0K2001
March 23, 2015 at 11:30 amShe was mean that day for sure.
I agree, I love to see people connect over words and books. I think that is why I love blogging SO much.
Stupid IS a bad word in our house.
It *does* seem harsher than some curse words, right? And coming from me that’s saying something, because I turn into a pirate after 8:30 p.m 😀
The only reason I read Bridges of Madison County… I was trying to get on my future (now) mother in law’s good side. 🙂 It was okay, but when you have nothing else to do it’s wonderful, you know what I mean?
Kudos to you and voracious reading! I am trying to increase my reading this year. Thanks for stopping by, Liz!

March 21, 2015 at 2:12 pmI love that you came up with your own stories to write. I may have to check out this book.

March 23, 2015 at 11:45 amThanks, I had to do something to pass the time. We didn’t have Candy Crush 😀
The book, eh, that was to pass time too.
Wishing you a beautiful week, Keisha!

March 22, 2015 at 4:16 pmOh no, I can’t believe she threw away your story!
I agree that the quote is a bit harsh, but I have to think if you claim not to enjoy reading books then you haven’t found the right one for you! For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed reading books. As it is now I feel lost if I’m not in the middle of one. (By the way, I started reading “Die Empty” after seeing you post about it!)
MrsA0K2001
March 23, 2015 at 11:51 amMe either, Bev. I would never think to do that, I may have said, “Take this home and don’t bring it back here again.” What a horribly disrespectful thing she did…
The quote is a bit harsh, but I totally think she meant: Who would pass up on a free journey, a chance to immerse yourself in a new life if only for 30 minutes of your day.. Maybe?
You are?!?! What do you think of the book thus far? My husband and I said we would read it together and fill out the workbook together, so I stopped reading it alone. I’m waiting….
I read the book Wonder this weekend 🙂
XOXO

March 23, 2015 at 10:20 amI can’t believe she threw out your work!! I would have probably been fired… for punching. Ugh!
I agree – it’s not a word I use often. I don’t like “ugly” either. To me, they are far worse than the “f” word.
That said, throwing out beautiful writing IS stupid!
MrsA0K2001
March 24, 2015 at 12:54 pmI agree that was stupid! I don’t like that word, but the action calls for it.
Surprisingly, I kept my cool.
