A Work In Progress, That's What She Said

On Being a Woman

On being a woman…

My thoughts on being a woman have changed since I was younger, but stayed the same in some respect.  I was once enchanted with the beauty of women from a more shallow perspective, I looked up to beautiful women with beautiful things and beautiful covers in magazines.

On being a woman| Mrs. AOK, A Work In Progress

Then I got a little older and loved women for more than their beauty and their things, but their thoughts and their actions.

Frida Kahlo| Strange company

As I grew older and had my own little women my love for being a woman increased. I loved our beauty, our wisdom, our kindness, our will, our ability to shatter glass ceilings! I read books, I learned more, I printed out a Rosie the Riveter sign and taped it to my girls’ door. Because…. WE CAN DO IT! I would never want my girls to feel they cannot do anything solely on the basis of being a girl. That’s ludicrous!

I printed out a Rosie the Riveter sign and taped it to my daughters' door, because we CAN do it!| On Being a Woman| Mrs. AOK, A Work In Progress

Sometimes, being a woman is hard. We’re expected to be traditional or modern, but I love being traditional and modern. I have my strong willed thoughts, my hopes for women and their place in society as equals, and I have dreams of bigger things for myself all while happily staying home and caring for my children (while making a small amount of mula here at home. [I’d like to make a bigger amount… ehem!]).

On being a woman| Mrs. AOK, A Work In Progress.

   (Do You!#TWSS)

Women can be catty. There I said it, we can. But dear ladies… we can be so much more if we didn’t turn on each other. If we didn’t belittle each other’s choices or circumstance. Why do we do that?

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.| On being a woman.

(You be the Judge #TWSS)

I cannot sit here and say I’ve never judged another woman because that would be a big fat lie. I have. And that’s not cool. I CAN tell you that I try more now as grown woman -who is proud to be a woman- to empower, encourage, and support other women. Chances are you’ve been inspired in life by another woman. My challenge to you is to let her know how she has inspired you!

Strong women build each other up! |Thank You Notes

Happy International Women’s Day! Keep pushing, believing, dreaming, reaching, doing, researching, writing, creating, loving, caring and giving– you inspire!

Your HostsHostsTWSS Thank You Heart Thanks for sharing your quotes with us last week! 😉   That's What She Said: Carrie Bradshaw Quotes| Writing Prompt| Quotes Maybe the past is like an anchor holding us back. Maybe you have to let go of who you were to become who you will be.

Maybe.

But maybe those bits of our past make us who we are today…

Maybe

we wouldn’t be here without there

But maybe

we’re better today

Maybe

letting go of the things that made us weak, sad, or fearful were the anchors

Maybe

you were you all along, and

maybe

you’re stronger than you ever knew.

Maybe

just maybe… letting go of you would be wrong.

Your Hosts             Hosts TWSS Thank You Heart   Thanks for sharing your “fun” with us! 😉 #TWSS Pick Your Own Quote This week we asked you to choose your own quote, we cannot wait to see what you picked!      lines Frida Kahlo| Strange company SOURCE I’m kooky. I’m silly. I’m flawed. I’m slightly strange (or squirrelly?) I’m me. I wondered in the past am I that aberrant- why am I always singled out for being silly? “You’re silly, Dean!” Is that bad? Is it wrong? To want to laugh and make others laugh, could this be a flaw? There were times when I would withhold my silly. There were also times when I was surrounded by many, but felt alone.   Something bizarre happened, I found out I wasn’t alone. I met someone who felt just like me. At first we both put up our guard, we only displayed our best traits. We grew closer. We laughed, we got silly, we shared our flaws. And then something even more bizarre happened… my flaws were now called beautiful scars were healed with love my silly was brilliant! We both let our guard down. We were free. Hours were (and are) spent talking, healing, loving, and caring. There is no longer a facade, the walls have come down.     We all have flaws, quirks, oddities that weave us together and make a beautiful mess The older I grow, the more I know I’m not alone. The people who have always been there are still there and there are more people out there I need to know. They too are not perfect. We’re not perfect. We’re perfect enough. Yes, it’s true, I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you. Untitled   If you’re out there 🙂

That's What She Said| Mary Poppins| In every job that must be done there is an element of fun. | Women's Words| Quote

Oh man! I kind of wrote about this here. And you know I’m trying to limit my repetitiveness… sort of.  So, this week I wrote a short story, it was kind of sad, and I decided to save it for another time. Instead, this post has been inspired by the spirit of Mary Poppins’ spunk to get shhhtuff done and The Office. My husband and I have started watching The Office from the beginning on Netflix (we were late Office watchers).

I have had to do some boring jobs in my life, so I learned to make the day pass I had to create the element of fun. It was the thing I did when I was younger, my younger brother and I would try to beat the clock to finish our chores, so we could play. I would setup a timer and we would hum William Tell Overture.

When I had my first job as a “opinion researcher” 😉 I would call people and use different voices. If you sound British people want to talk to you. Thanks for helping me make quota Anglophiles. 🙂

The Office UK

Thankfully, I have worked in places where I made friends or had friends to goof around with. I mean we worked, but we made the best of it. Also, having friends while being a young mother at home with kid(s) was super helpful. You need laughter. Good friends= laughter!

friendsjokes

Music has always been a source of happiness for me; when I was a waitress I learned to love Dave Matthews Band while working with the owner’s son’s friend that was home from college.

I worked at a desk once where I wrote a story for my co-workers.

I realize, I have come full circle. The fun little games I would create for my younger brother and I to get motivated to finish our chores, I’m now doing with my kids. 🙂    What do you do to make work fun? Show us yours

You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. |Maya Angelou| TWSS| Quotes| Women's Words| Link-up

This is true.

I know this to be true.

I have lived this.

I am living this.

Not too long ago I was living in what I refer to as my gray era.

Gray.

I was happy, but there was something missing. When I wasn’t happy, I was sad, anxious, and somewhat of a hypochondriac. There was a lot going on in my life at that time, I was finishing up school, I was pregnant with my third child, PCOS, my parents were going through their divorce, I was living away from family, which at the time I guess wasn’t so bad (being away during that time).  The classes I was taking dealt with the human psyche, which I love, but….

I was beginning to analyze myself, my friends and my family. I hated it. My nervousness was at an all time high. I had my first panic attack when I was pregnant with my son. I was breathing heavily, I couldn’t stop, all I could do was cry, I had NO IDEA WHY. My husband was such a rock that night, he held me and calmed me. I felt bad for feeling like that, because I was so happy. I was over the moon that I was about to have my baby boy, the baby they said would never happen. Perhaps, the hormonal ups and downs of pregnancy had me on a tightrope of emotions, but there were so many things piling up on my rope I was bound to fall. I had a safety net. I’ll get to that later…

The joy of having my son was exuberant! I was on top of the world. Of course, my world involved other people and phone calls and sometimes those things brought me right back to that place.  I ended up in the hospital. My heart hurt, my whole chest for that matter, and my hand started to feel numb. I was terrified, I phoned a nurse and she told me to get to the ER.  I drove myself to the ER, my husband stayed with the kids. Test upon test upon test were ran on me. NOTHING. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I now know what it was, it was a panic attack. I started to drift away, I could see myself starting to let go of things, people, attachments that were beginning to become cancer. (While we’re on the subject if you’re anxious NEVER EVER go to WebMD, because you’re DEAD. I have been healthier since I’ve stopped visiting WebMD for symptoms. #TheMoreYouKnow)

Color.

I started to get back to doing the things I liked doing. I started a blog under an alias, I got things off of my chest there. I didn’t keep it long, I started to focus more on journaling and doing things I could also do with the babies. I am no Picasso, but I love to paint.  I would take all the babies outside to paint under our big tree in the backyard. IMG_0336

Creating

I started to make things and people wanted to buy them! I sold them!!! This made me happy; I was working with my hands, doing what I loved to do, CREATE! Every little girl in my cul-de-sac, as well as my girls’ friends wore my headbands (I made tutus too). 🙂

One neighbor told me I wasn’t charging enough, she was right, but I just loved making things. I loved writing about making things, thus this blog was born. Or the original blog was born, but has had a few rebirths. 🙂  I was an Etsy seller, a crafty blogger, and then I was just me. I think I should also thank Phyllis for letting me do me, too. 🙂  She gave me a shot at writing and editing for her magazine and that opened up new doors to my creativity. I loved working for Tots to Teens, it helped me stay focused on something other than things that didn’t matter. I was creating content, searching for content, and talking to people. I was happy in my element.

EarthWithoutArt

I love to write, I love to paint, draw, hot glue, glitter, stamp, draw, cook, create with my hands and my mind. I’m more colorful because of that. I’m me again, because I invited color and creativity back into my life (along with other things. I’m also thankful for a strong loving support unit). I use to get excited to write papers about things I truly cared about for school and do PowerPointPresentations (because that was the most creative thing you can do for online classes). Now, I’m excited to write for me and for you.

Being creative helped save me from… me. The more creativity I use, the more I feel better.

A lot of people are afraid to say what they want.Madonna Quote That's What She Said

Cue the music…

Fan or no fan of Madonna, you have to admire the fact that she has held on tight to her career. I mean she’s all B**ch I’m Madonna with confidence and dancing better than some of those kids with her 56 year-old self. I’m 34 and I’m not sure you’ll see me dancing down a hall with 20-somethings singing “B**tch I’m Dean!” But that’s just it, Madonna demands that, she has absolutely no problem saying what she wants. She’s a go-getter.

Sometimes, I say what I want. Sometimes, I’m heard, and sometimes I’m not. And if I want to be heard should I repeat myself? I hate repeating myself, I just repeated myself. I’m sure I’ve said that same phrase in the past 10 days at least 4 times. So why not repeat myself once more…

This January I chose some words, I said I wanted to do all these things, do you remember?  No? Okay, I’ll say it again, because if I keep saying it maybe I’ll do better.

Does anything ever go as “planned”? I am not an actress, an astronaut (astronauts were all the rage in the late 80’s, if you were a kid in the late 80’s you wanted to be an astronaut), or a bigwig at a fancy smancy New York magazine. I had planned on being married one day, having a kid or two, (or in my case three) and being happy. Life is not something you can plan. Life just is. Oh what a ride it is!

******
Sometimes, two people meet
Sometimes, those people fall in love, passionately in love, the kind of love that feels intense that burns in your soul, the burn will not go away.
The heart ignites a dangerous fire
That fire has a name and it’s His
but she’s yours, or is she His?
It doesn’t matter because that flame has no bearing on your feelings for her.
She has you.
Those white pants, that white shirt, even with two kids in tow

She deserves love
You give love
He doesn’t
You do
She needs YOU

You love her so hard

You make her your wife

The four of you start a new life
You have a family, you had a struggle, but you made a family with her in the white pants
9 months later you made Her (your sunshine)
She represents fire, love, and passion
She loves fierce too
She looks just like you
You never knew that life would bring you here: holding a baby girl singing songs and holding back tears.

You go on to make a son
he’s hot headed, witty, and cute
You name him after you
Now your family is complete

Life takes you on many twists
but I cannot understand this…
When did the flame finally blow out?
When did you truly decide to let it all go?
Life has a way of doing this…. i admit.

I choose to not let the fire out
I will be there
I will always be around
He will call my name and I will be there for him and his kids, my kids, our kids
because we are one… family.
He and I will dance our last dance
on our last day
that one day

The fiery passion is still in my soul
I think You and Her put it there for me….

My entire life can be described in one sentence: Lessons learned; omitting the bullshit and loving life, flaws and all.. or To be continued?

One autobiography I was fascinated with was Rosie Perez’s. Sometimes, you think you know about a person due to what you see in the media or a quick 3 minute interview, but reading about her (or his) life can sometimes totally change your opinion. That was the case with Rosie. (If you haven’t read Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling, I totally suggest it.) With Sophia Amoruso, however, I honestly had no idea who she was. I just knew everyone loved her book, loved her message, and she had tons of pinnable quotes. I cannot rate #GIRLBOSS, because I am not finished. What I can tell you though, is that although I did not have ample time to read over the weekend, the time I did have to read, I read! I want to be a #GIRLBOSS! I know I want to do something creative, something more, and I plan on making something happen. Anyway, this post was not and is not intended to be a series of autobiography reviews, but it does sound like a good idea. I’m going to jot that down!

CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?! If you are a man, a woman, a mother, a blogger, a baker, or even a candlestick maker, this applies to YOU! We are constantly comparing, it’s in our freakin’ social DNA. Like. Like. Like. Oh! How can I do that too? Why can’t I do that too? How does she do it all? I want, I want, I want. Does this sound vaguely familiar? Highlight-Reel Behind-the-Scenes When you start to compare your behind-the-scenes to others’ highlight reel you’re robbing yourself of your own time and energy. People tend to crop the other stuff out, display or promote the highlights, because who wants to see the shitty stuff?  Nobody says: I have two sinks full of dishes, I haven’t paid my bills, and I just threw on makeup with this beautiful jewelry for this perfect outdoors selfie, because sponsors and good lighting. Nobody says that! They say: Loving this spring weather and my new jewelry sent to me via ___FILL IN THE BLANK__ #SUNDAYFUNDAY#SP #GetYourLifeRight #JewelryOnFleek| Something like that. I guess what I am trying to say is… we. are. all. human. Nobody. is. perfect. We can sit and admire and daydream about the greener grass, but seriously is it greener? And if it is, perhaps it is because the grass is being watered and not neglected keeping a watchful eye on someone else’s. #GIRLBOSS DO YOU! Nobody is going to give you what you want without you asking for what you want. If you want something make it happen. If you admire what someone else has or does, why can’t you? You can, but make it yours! Do not go for exactly what they have, go for what you want and more, do it with your spin, your own creative approach and own that shit! (My inner #GirlBoss just came out me-ow!) And here’s a little something to remember, ready? Most people are faking it till they make it! #GirlBoss All actions are creative Faking it. I’m quite transparent here. In the past I struggled with the concept “fake it till you make it”, but after talking to countless bloggers and attending one blog conference, I was reassured that this is ‘the’ mantra. This is the thought I try to fall back on when I start to feel myself with a case of the greens, (greens: gazing at grass when you need to water your own) they may be “faking” it, also, we are all human- you can make that happen too! You’re human, I’m human, We’re all human!  Don’t get yourself down, focus on you, what you want, and how you’re going to get it. Now, go water your lawn! #GIRLBOSS: There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure     XOXO

Have you ever seen the movie, Field of Dreams?

I have seen the movie quite a few times, it is one of my husband’s favorite movies. Ray (played by Kevin Costner),  hears a voice in his Iowa cornfield that whispers, “If you build it, he will come.” Ray, interprets this message as he must build a baseball field. HE PLOWS DOWN HIS CORNFIELD, TO BUILD A BASEBALL DIAMOND. He is a FARMER. UGH… I am not sure I could do that, I’m not sure I could plow down my family’s livelihood, to go on a hunch. But you know what he did… he believed. He took a freakin’ leap of faith! The faith that lies within us to believe in… us. I have noticed, as we get older freakin’ fear outweighs freakin’ faith. It’s true, right? We have to see things {now} before we step. We have to dot the i’s, cross the t’s, and balance the books. WHY!?!

Adult. It’s a symptom many of us have. It’s the thing that tells us what we should do, how we should do it, and why. It’s all serious, and uptight. Don’t get me wrong, adult is good. “Adult” gets the bills paid, the kids fed, and the house in order. BUT, sometimes it dulls the magic we once held. Believing is seeing… double ugh! Nooooooo- I want to believe, I want to imagine my dreams SO HARD that they come true. I know, I know, imagining is NOT going to make dreams happen- work is. See, you thought you out adult’ed me, but I got you… I’m an adult too. 🙂

My husband and I have SO MANY dreams. We will spend late nights and early mornings talking about our dreams. There are many things we would rather do than what we have to do. There are different places we would rather be than where we are (geographically). Our dreams always include our crew, the words “party of five” have never been sweeter. My husband and I took a different path than many people our age have: we got married young, had our babies young, and now our decisions aren’t just ours, we have to consider them. And although considering them, the loves of our lives, we also cannot give up on us… and our dreams. So, we’re still dream chasing, we may take baby steps, but we see the beauty.

Right now, the beauty, is showing the babies, that dreams can be chased down no matter how big or small, or how old you are. My kids have seen me chase and achieve things, but there is still more to come. The future is ours. 🙂

There is beauty in your dreams, don’t give up!!

Show us yours
