This week’s quote:

#TWSS: Sometimes you just have to put on lipgloss and pretend to be psyched.- Mindy Kaling

Sometimes you just have to put on lipgloss and pretend to be psyched.

She had the familiar smile that everyone close to her became so accustomed to. The light crescent creases on the sides of her mouth were filled with kindness and forgiveness. She had a warmness present in her smile. Sometimes, she would decorate that smile with her favorite cherry lipgloss with the coral shimmer- she used it sparingly. Behind that smile she puts on everyday she hid pain and more baggage than a girl her age should have to carry. She worked hard for every single thing she had, including her fancy cherry flavored lipgloss.

Today, she would treat herself to a little more lipgloss, she had to. She had to play it up, she had to get psyched, this was her day.  It was the day she had worked toward for so long.  She would spend countless hours studying, writing, working, and missing. She missed a lot.

She missed out on being a real teen and doing all sorts of teenage things. She missed countless school functions to work for minimum wage, to help out.  But what she missed most was him. She missed being his little princess, putting on his boots after work; she missed being in sports and having him root for her wildly in the stands. She missed his smell and his good-night kisses on her forehead.

She missed how happy he made her mom. Mom had turned to other things to make her happy these days. Mom’s new found happy resulted in a little girl growing up too fast, working to help out at home, and caring for a younger brother when Mom could not. She had to let go of sports. She knew she would not let this go, her moment was now.  The thought of him not being there to root her on started to swell, her eyes began to burn as she held back tears.

She applied a nice thick layer of cherry lipgloss with the coral shimmer and told herself you can do this. She could, she just could not think about everything she went through daily for the past two years, silently.  She knew he would be there, she could feel it, he was proud. She knew she couldn’t back out, she had to keep being brave for her brother.  She felt as though she was paving a path for him to follow.  She put on her beautiful royal blue robe with the golden sash and once again reminded herself she could do this.

She walked on the stage flashed that beautiful comforting smile.  “Class of 2015, WE DID IT…”

I think this story is beautifully written! Reminds me of a couple friends I had in high school, who often missed days because they had to work & help their families. With the way you wrote this, it seems like you really understand the struggle & pain of loss. I love how she treated herself with more lipgloss than usual 🙂 Thanks for encouraging me to link up…I’m about to hit publish, eek lol

I may have a slight understanding, but thankfully never had to endure what she did.

You have a wonderful way with words. When are you writing/publishing your book? I want an autographed copy of it!

I admire the girl in this post and the amazing woman I’m sure she’ll become. xo

Hmmm… to be honest I usually write children’s stories, this was new for me. I mean I know I’ve written about my life in storybook fashion, but this was new. However, if I ever do publish you know you’ll get a signed copy!

I think she would grow up to be an amazing woman, maybe a bit bruised….

I grew up in a military town, I grew up military, I married military, so that kind of had a little something to do with it.

Terribly sorry to make you cry…. if it makes you feel any better I cried writing this. All of a sudden tears started streaming down in puddles in my notebook. I don’t know why, they just did.

This is beautiful, Dean. It reminds me of when my dad and I saw this young lady going to her college graduation in my town. She was walking, by herself, from the parking lot of a crappy motel in her cap and gown and heels. She looked sad. But someone drove by her and honked the horn and her face lit up. Like, at last, someone was there to say, “Good job!” Tugs at the heartstrings.
