That's What She Said J.K Rowling

My daughter is a H U G E Harry Potter fan, so obviously she enjoys J.K Rowling’s work. I imagine if J.K told her, “Sweetheart, it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your friends, don’t be afraid- they’re not always right,” she would be inclined to listen. I am sure she would sit there with her hands placed under her chin gleefully ready to hear whatever else J.K had to say.

Harry Potter Day

I am not J.K. I am just her Mama; her not-so-famous, nor rich, amateur-writing Mama. I have tales to tell, I am not sure if she would like for me to elaborate with her hands held under her chin gleefully, but I do know a thing or two about a thing or two. So, since that is the case let’s pretend I’m J.K for a few minutes, shall we… (remember I am an amateur, no need to critique)

Mrs. AOK, A Work In Progress

Dear Young Teen Girls,

You are at the age where things are changing, people are changing, friendships grow and sadly some die. I have a quote that some people are not fans of, but I think you should hear this, soak it in:

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.

I am not asking you to declare war on your friends or to be hoity-toity, but what I am saying, is to stand for the good and the right that is missing from this world. You will know when to pick your battles, but you must listen to your favourite person… you. Yes, you! You should be your favourite person. Love yourself, respect yourself, and do not allow others to disrespect you or others around you.

The term “mean girls” is a part of our vernacular, because there are mean girls. It is deplorable that some girls are mislead by the fallacy that tearing down others will build them up- that is utter rubbish! You do not need to bring someone down to bring yourself up. If you see this injustice, say something. Be kind. The antagonist never wins in my book. 😉

I am asking you to be the hero of your life, if you need saving… safe yourself. Yes, saving yourself can mean asking someone for help. We cannot do everything alone. If a friend needs help, and they are not hearing you and something needs to be done: ASK FOR HELP! Sometimes, standing up to a friend can save a life. Let them know life is worth living.

If you happen to have a friend who is a boy, and he takes you to a school dance and buys you a fancy dinner that does NOT mean you owe him anything. If he parks the car and locks the doors and you feel uncomfortable tell him. And if he is persistent in his attempts to go further with you get out of the car, call someone, you do not deserve that- this boy is not your friend.

Friends do not always have to agree. You do not have to do what your friends are doing and if they are pressuring you do what they think is “cool” stand up for your morals. Your morals may differ from theirs you do not have to adapt to fit theirs. A good friend will understand who you are and will not push.

I could write a book on this, but I will stop there.

Love Always,

J.K (Okay, that’s a pseudonym) A.O.K ♡

I needed this reminder this morning as even now as an adult I’m dealing with a friend who loves to bully to get her way. I always have to decide if it is a battle worth putting my flag on. She’s a friend in some ways but it does take bravery to stand up to her. Great quote!!

I am sorry you have to deal with, Sheryl. Honestly, some people are just so pushy.
Yeah, it is great that you are a straight shooter, but some people take that too far with their words… right? Anyway, I hope you’re having a good week. Wishing you a beautiful peaceful weekend! Thanks for stopping by.

You may not be J.K Rowling but you are a great mother! If your daughter reads this when she’s older and struggling with all the changes that happen as we grow up in our teenage years then she’s going to be just fine! This was beautiful – I wish I would have had something like this when I was growing up. xxo

Thank you, Kristy!! You are too kind!!
I wish I would have had a more open relationship with my parents about these types of things when I was younger. I am happy that my 13 year-old and I are building a relationship based on honesty and openness. I hope she will always come to me.
      XOXO

Aww shucks, Bev!!! Thank you. I know you and Eve will have a beautiful honest relationship. I sincerely hope I will get to see that… Friends Forever? 🙂

A great letter to your daughter! You hit great points, like believing in yourself, standing up for what you believe, and not compromising yourself for your friends or boys. Especially not for boys!

You my friend are a wonderful human being. You have a kind, loving, nurturing soul. And that is what shines through in your post today. You spoke the truth and shared your wisdom. Your daughters (and your son too) are lucky to have a mama like you. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world. XO

      I’m pretty lucky too.

I think you hit all of the important points. I feel like it’s so hard to teach them everything, but I wish that I could! Can we just put together a manual so they won’t have to go through the crap we did? But, I guess that’s part of life though. It’s what will shape our girls into the women they will be one day. It’s still scary to me!

    1. MrsA0K2001

      April 17, 2015 at 5:26 pm

Yes, a manual, that would be great! However, they have to learn and fly… right? I wish I would have written a book for my girls about being a girl/young lady before they became young ladies. I would have eloquently told real life stories (of course making myself look a little more goodie goodie than I was). I would have remapped or pointed out where I went wrong and where I went right, or what I should’ve done.
As much as I hate to think of my babies dealing with hard decisions and jerks, I know they’ll learn from those experiences.I hope to keep an open and honest relationship with them, so hopefully they’ll come to me when they need me.
      XOXO

It’s definitely important to remember to stand up to friends. It can be hard because they’re our friends and we don’t want to jeopardize our friendships, but you just have to cross that line sometimes and put your foot down. I’ve certainly been in the position where I’ve had to let a friend know he/she was doing something wrong and that I wasn’t cool with it.

I’ve shed a few friends doing that. However, at the end of the day those people weren’t really friends to begin with. Friendship is about being supportive and calling each other on our BS when we need to be. I’m a fellow Harry Potter/J. K. Rowling fan too!

I agree with everything you said. I have lost friends too because I didn’t like what they had to say or what they did. Sometimes it is best to cut ties, some people are cancer in your life, and you do not need that. You can still love from afar.

Can I Just copy and paste this for my kids? And you could be the next J.K.. or better! Didn’t she write a book on a napkin or something?
    (Harry Potter Day looks AWESOME)

    1. MrsA0K2001

      April 20, 2015 at 3:43 pm

Yes, of course, copy and paste away. 🙂
I wish, that would be magnificent, but I don’t know if I have “that” talent. I’m not sure if she did, but I once wrote my Thank You Notes post on a napkin. 😀
I totally thought of you and Courtney when I found the Harry Potter Day pictures.

You’re such a good mama. You give great advice. I think you should start an advice column. Dear Mrs. A.O.K. hehe. 🙂

      An advice column… thinking… the pressure…
I’ll just stick to being “friend.”

That’s a great quote and applicable to so many situations.

Love your advice for your daughter (and love that she’s a little bookworm!); it’s so important to have these conversations!

Thank you, Keisha. These conversations are growing & evolving, it’s bittersweet.
